A HEART FOCUSED APPROACH TO HEALTH AND WELLBEING

You are an electromagnetic energy being. I know that you have heard of measuring the hearts electric activity with an EKG and the brains electric activity with an EEG. More recent research is focusing on the fact that the hearts electrical activity is 60 times stronger than the brains and the hearts magnetic activity is 5000 times stronger than the brains. The heart it turns out is sending more information to the brain than vice versa. HeartMath is a company that for years has been focusing on strengthening the heart-brain communication for better health. In fact the hearts electromagnetic energy doesn’t just communicate with the brain. The hearts electromagnetic field also radiates inward to reach cells, tissues and organs and it radiates outward to affect your environment and the people in your environment. This amounts to a huge impact on your overall health and wellbeing. Learning to be intentional about what you allow into your heart field and what you give permission to spread throughout your body is an important skill set.  A simple way to look at this is that positive emotions generate a stronger more harmonious heart electromagnetic field. It turns out you can develop heart habits that enhance the field. Your own body will let you know if your hearts electromagnetic field is strong – we all know that warm, fuzzy, expansive feeling that does seem to radiate throughout the body. That’s a good sign you are enhancing your hearts electromagnetic field.

Approaching the holidays is a fabulous time to concentrate on using your heart and it’s powerful field to not only enhance your wellbeing but also the wellbeing of others. Over the years, a common mistake that I make and I see other women make during the holidays is to live too much “IN OUR HEADS”. After all, women are in charge of SO many activities during the holidays and it can turn into a very stressful time of year. This year I am going to focus on letting my heart set the tone for the holidays instead of letting my brain run the show. There are many heart focused exercises you can do but my personal favorite is to practice gratitude (it turns out November is National Gratitude Month – who knew!). One reason I love gratitude is that over the years, learning from tens of thousands of patients, I have observed that women who practice gratitude age better mentally and physically. One thing I know for sure is that we all struggle in life for one reason or another but these women always look for what’s positive in a situation and I consistently see them have better outcomes. Part of my daily routine for years has been to cultivate that warm fuzzy heart vibration. It can physically feel like the heart is bigger (think of the Grinch’s heart “growing two sizes that day”). I use to keep a gratitude journal writing down 5 things I was grateful for at the end of the day. In recent years (with my phone being ever-present) I have upgraded to throughout the day taking pictures of the people and things (often nature) that I am grateful for. I store these photos in my phone under a Gratitude Album. This has resulted in me seeing and feeling more things throughout the day that I am grateful for and the added benefit is that I can look at all the pictures in my album on days I need a pick me up. I truly feel I have developed a stronger heart field by practicing daily gratitude and that it has helped me live a fuller healthier life.
